Description

An absolutely beautiful tree with vivid coloring spring through fall and exceptional sun tolerance, the Orangeola Japanese Maple is a weeping, semi-upright grower to about 8 to 10 feet tall an 8 feet wide. In spring its new lacy leaves emerge bright orange to red. As the second flush of growth comes on the trees can have a two tone appearance; orange new growth with dark maroon and/or green older growth. During summer the leaves may become a handsome green with orange and red undertones. In fall, a spectacular show of brilliant fiery-red and orange is truly a sight to behold!

Landscape & Garden Uses

To showcase its magnificence and beauty, Orangeola Japanese Maple is best used in the landscape as a focal point specimen to draw attention to a specific area of the home or landscape. That said, you can plant them in groupings of three or plant one on both sides of an entryway. Orangeola is excellent for use in containers.

Suggested Spacing: At least 12 feet apart for space between trees

Container culture can extend the useful range of Japanese Maples. They are extremely easy to grow in containers, a practice taken to its most extreme form in the art of bonsai. Click on the link below under Helpful Articles for Japanese Maple container planting instructions.

Note: One Japanese Maple can make a landscape…that is, if you don’t overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when choosing companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, make sure to select low-growing shrubs or groundcovers that won’t interfere at all with your tree.

Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Japanese Maple variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Growing Preferences

Though delicate looking, Japanese Maples are actually very tough and long-lived trees. They are very easy to grow. Container culture can extend their useful range. They are extremely easy to grow in containers, a practice taken to its most extreme form in the art of bonsai.

In their natural habitat, Japanese Maples are understory trees, growing in dappled forest sunlight at the edges of woodlands. That said, Orangeola Japanese Maple has excellent sun tolerance.

Most any average garden soil will grow Japanese Maples. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant your Japanese Maple in a well-drained site.

We ordered a 5 gallon Orangeola Weeping Maple in the fall of 2020, it dropped its leaves pretty soon after being planted. We were a little concerned because there is a scar on the tree trunk, however this has not affected the growth of this tree. We planted it as a focal point at the entryway to the front door. It seems to like it’s new home and just continues to grow and produce new leaves. I have been told by my neighbors here in Houston that their Japanese maples do not turn the beautiful colors in the fall because it does not get cold enough…. I was not sure if I could plant my tree here in NY because the weather can be iffy in April. I sent a message on a Saturday and had a response that day. It was very helpful because I was informed that I should wait to plant my Japanese Maple. We have had a couple of frosts so….

I ordered 2 of these maples for 2 large patio pots. They arrived with no broken limbs. Extremely well packed and shipped (not even any dirt slipping out of the pot!). Transplanted well and are starting to get some leaf nubs even with a cold snap in our area. I am moving them into the sun during the day the under patio cover for the night while the cold is still around. Not sure if I need to do this but don’t want to miss the beautiful spring colors. Shipping was quick and updates were easy to track. Plants were in great shape, well watered and have lots of branches. I am relatively new to purchasing trees through the mail. However, Wilson Brothers seems to be on the ball. The tree was shipped FED EX and arrived the next day. It seemed in no acute distress and seemed in A1 condition.
The orangeola is a small specimen type of tree. It is absolutely perfect for the spot I planted it.
I honestly was shocked what a perfect shape it had. I could not have picked one out that good myself.
